Upper Airway Pre Purchase Examination
- Essential in assessment of athletic ability -
Examinations of the upper airway (UA) at racehorse sales around the world become an important part of the purchase examination performed on horses intended for athletic endeavors. The examination is obviously done to avoid purchasing a horse with a condition or abnormality that will adversely affect the ability of the horse to train or race.
The focus of this information is to raise awareness of the variations discovered as a result of evaluating the UA of the immature racehorse (yearling, 2-year-old etc.), particularly in reference to function of the larynx (and arytenoids) and other influential aspects of it.
The amazing calculation of a circular opening (= Larynx)!
Some well developed horses will have an air intake opening capacity which can be
twice that of others. In terms of the physics of airflow that means:
A circular opening which is twice the diameter of another one
is not twice - but sixteen times as efficient!
This is practically determined by the expansion capacity of the Larynx's muscular structures and other important factors of it. In comparison the airway cavities and the wind pipe vary insignificantly in size, creating only minor differences in airflow capacity.
